Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi stated that the Indonesian government continues communication to evacuate Indonesian citizens after an Indonesian died in a Bangladesh hotel that caught fire on August 5.

In a written statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Indonesian victim, with the initials DU, died due to excessive inhalation of smoke as the hotel where the victim was staying caught fire during the riots in Bangladesh.

"The ministry has communicated with the family. We have also spoken with our ambassador in Dhaka and continued communication to carry out the evacuation as well as possible," Marsudi stated in a press statement at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.

The victim, DU, is known to have arrived in Bangladesh on August 1, 2024, for a business visit.

Following DU's death, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also contacted the victim's family in Indonesia to express condolences and facilitate the repatriation of the body.

On August 6, the ministry issued an appeal for Indonesian citizens in Bangladesh to increase their vigilance and reduce outdoor activities for non-essential matters as well as avoid crowds and demonstration locations.

Indonesian citizens planning to travel to Bangladesh are advised to postpone their travel until the security situation and conditions improve.

All Indonesian citizens in Bangladesh are also advised to maintain communication and always follow the contingency steps set by the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka.

At least 73 people were killed, including 14 police officers, in clashes between security forces and protesters in Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh.

Protests escalated last week over the Bangladeshi government's civil service quota policy following clashes at Dhaka University.

Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament, marking the end of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's reign, who fled to India after facing massive demonstrations against the civil service quota in the country.

The Bangladeshi presidency noted in a statement on August 6 that the decision was taken after discussions with the heads of the armed forces, political party leaders, civil society representatives, and leaders of the student-led protest movement.
