Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) plans to hold a ceremony marking the first Police Struggle Day at the Polri Monument of Struggles in Surabaya City, East Java, on August 21, 2024.

August 21 was designated as the day of commemoration of Indonesian police's struggles for Indonesia's Independence by Polri Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo through a decree issued on January 22, 2024.

"According to the plan, Mr. Polri Chief will preside over the ceremony," Head of Polri's Public Information Bureau, Brigadier Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, noted in his office's statement received here on Sunday.

He informed that the inaugural Police's Struggle Day would be celebrated under the theme of "Polri Poised to Welcome Golden Indonesia 2045 with the Spirit of the 1945 Police Proclamation".

A thanksgiving event will be held at the Headquarters of the East Java Police on Tuesday (August 20) evening prior to the ceremony that will take place the following morning, he added.

Andiko underlined that August 21 was a date of chief historic value to the Polri. On that date in 1945, the Japan-made Special Police Corps (Tokubetsu Keisatsutai) of Surabaya led by Inspector Moehammad Jasin read out the so-called Police Proclamation.

The event was a follow-up to the decision made by Indonesian State Minister Otto Iskandar Dinata to incorporate the police into the Indonesian government after the Proclamation of Indonesia's Independence on August 17, 1945.

In response to the decision, Jasin, declared as a national hero in 2015, held a meeting with fellow officers to discuss the position of their institution. The occasion resulted in the drafting of the Police Proclamation.

On August 21, 1945, in front of around 250 police officers, Jasin read out the proclamation at the Headquarters of the Special Police Corps.

"That was the moment, during which all police officers across the country decided to unite under the banner of the Republic of Indonesia Police that is free from the influence of the Japanese colonial power," Andiko stated.
