Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, on Tuesday listed the benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI) to provide optimal public services.

For instance, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) is using AI as a useful tool to detect fake news in the digital space, he informed.

"We have developed AI technology to detect fake news, which is circulating in the digital world. We are using a technology called Natural Language Processing and machine learning," he said during a public discussion on "AI Transformation Policy Manifesto, Recommendations for Optimization of Indonesia's Digital Economy" here on Tuesday.

He also spoke about AI utilization by the Ministry of Health.

Currently, he said, several hospitals in Indonesia, under the auspices of the Health Ministry, are using AI to handle radiology and pathology patients.

Patria noted that several local governments and AI utilization agencies are now familiar with analyzing large amounts of data for specific purposes, such as predicting weather and disasters and managing traffic.

According to him, many countries, including Indonesia, have adopted AI in public services.

"Adoption of AI can support social welfare, if carried out appropriately," Patria said.

However, the government must be ready to handle the negative impact of AI in order to create effective governance both for the country and the people.

He pointed out that one of the risks of using AI pertains to the use of face recognition, which can be used to monitor people's movements and collect their personal data or even, political views.

According to Patria, AI must not be used this way because it is contrary to the main goal of democracy, which upholds freedom of expression.

"It needs to be in a balanced way; I think this is a test for a democratic government. It must be supported by goodwill and ethics," he said.
