West Aceh (ANTARA) - The Jakarta contingent dominated the handball competitions at the Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON), with both the men's and women's teams from the province emerging as champions in the final round of competitions.

Speaking to reporters in Meulaboh, West Aceh district, Aceh province, on Tuesday, Jakarta's handball coach Muhammad Arif highlighted that the victory of the men's team in the tournament marks their second consecutive gold win after the Papua PON in 2021.

Meanwhile, the women's handball team from the capital city managed to secure a gold medal at this year's PON after clinching a bronze in the previous edition of the grand national sporting event.

"In short, the men's team came to Aceh as the defending champions, while our women's team came here to snatch the gold medal," the coach remarked.

Earlier, on Monday, the Jakarta men's handball team defeated their opponents from West Java in the final match with a final scoreline of 25-23.

Meanwhile, the bronze medal was claimed by the Central Java team, which beat East Kalimantan by a narrow 42-41 score.

The same day, the Jakarta women's handball team won the final match against East Kalimantan by 21-20.

In the third-place playoff, the West Java women's team took the bronze after crushing the Bali team 30-22.
