Head of the National Alms Agency (Baznas), Noor Achmad, has informed that the agency will allocate a portion of the charitable funds it collects to help Palestine reconstruct public facilities destroyed by Israel.
Speaking at an awards event held by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Jakarta on Thursday, Achmad said that the decision was made after consulting with Baznas' domestic and international partners.
"We asked for information and advice from our partners in Egypt and Indonesia, including the Indonesian Ulema Council. They suggested that we save a portion of the funds we collect for future reconstruction processes instead of distributing the whole funds straight away," he disclosed.
The official said that the philanthropic agency may work with the MUI to rebuild the Indonesian Hospital in Palestine as well as reconstruct mosques and schools there.
Achmad highlighted the Indonesian people's notable contributions to Palestine's relief funds, saying that the total value of charitable funds donated through Baznas since October 2023 has far surpassed the initial target set by the agency.
"Back then, our short-term target was to collect Rp10 billion (US$646 thousand). However, we managed to receive over Rp30 billion (US$1.9 million) within less than 10 days," he informed.
He said that so far, the alms agency has obtained Rp320 billion (US$20.6 million) in donations, and distributed Rp120 billion (US$7.7 million) to those in need in Palestine.
According to the Baznas leader, the huge amount of charitable donations is a testament to the Indonesian nation's steadfast dedication to helping those affected by humanitarian crises without diving into the fray.
