Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko stated that research and innovation programs are one of the priorities of President-elect Prabowo Subianto's government.

"Yes, the space is one of them," Handoko remarked when asked about the plans of the next government's research and innovation program here on Friday (Oct 18).

Handoko highlighted that research and innovation in the space sector are among the government's priorities since this sector is part of Indonesia's sovereignty.

However, Indonesia currently does not have a special satellite apart from a telecommunications satellite.

He underscored the importance of conducting research in the space sector, as it is entirely the government’s responsibility through the mandate carried out by BRIN.

"Therefore, we must take strategic steps to ensure that Indonesia can have the ability to utilize space optimally while also maintaining our territorial sovereignty," he emphasized.

In addition, Handoko stated that Prabowo is concerned about the need to create new and renewable energy to achieve the target of net zero carbon emissions.

He remarked that efforts to realize this include the construction of a Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) currently being prepared by BRIN so as to ensure its implementation can be more optimal.

"Nuclear is indeed one or perhaps the only option we can take and that has become a common concern of the House of Representatives as well. This is why the revision of the Law on New and Renewable Energy was carried out," he remarked.

Strengthening human resource (HR) development, which includes research and innovation, is one of the points in the Asta Cita mission of the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka government.

In addition, energy self-sufficiency is also one of Prabowo-Gibran's campaign promises.

Such a step was driven by the new government to empower Indonesia to become the world's main supplier of green energy through the development of biodiesel and bioavtur products from palm oil, bio-ethanol from sugarcane and cassava, as well as green energy from wind, solar, and geothermal.

To realize this, government policies that support investment in education, science, and technology, as well as digitalization are considered necessary by the Prabowo-Gibran government.
