At the APEC CEO Summit 2024 in Peru on Thursday, President Prabowo Subianto highlighted that Indonesia is among the few countries with the potential to fully transition to new and renewable energy in a few years.
"Perhaps we will be one of the few countries that can achieve 100 percent renewable energy within a few years. We can replace fossil (-based) fuel with renewable (ones)," he said at the event, which was followed on his Secretariat's YouTube channel from Jakarta on Friday.
He noted that Indonesia, one of the largest countries in the world, is facing tough challenges.
However, he said, the nation is blessed with natural resources that can be found both on the land and the sea, owing to its vast territory.
He then expressed optimism about the country achieving self-sufficiency in energy in the next few years by resorting to more eco-friendly energy sources, such as geothermal.
He pointed out that Indonesia stores about 60 percent of the world's geothermal potential.
Indonesia also has huge potential in solar energy and bioenergy, he said while noting that the country will likely accord priority to the production of plant-based fuels to pave the way for its energy transition goal.
He then spoke about his plan to collaborate with Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to produce biofuels.
"I think that we, together with Brazil and the D.R. Congo, have the potential to produce fuels from plants. I think this (initiative) will create a lot of opportunities," he added.
