The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is overseeing the realization of Microsoft's commitment to invest US$1.7 billion in Indonesia.
"Our job is to oversee that the commitment can be properly implemented in Indonesia," Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said on Monday.
She noted that Microsoft's investment in Indonesia includes efforts to develop artificial intelligence (AI). On Monday, her ministry and Microsoft launched the elevAIte Indonesia program to provide AI skills to young people.
Hafid emphasized the importance of monitoring the AI skills development program to ensure its benefits can be felt by the community.
She expressed the hope that AI will not merely be used to improve public service efficiency but also to create a healthier and safer digital environment.
"We received suggestions that the people are demanding a healthy internet," she said.
Meanwhile, Microsoft ASEAN president Andrea Della Mattea said that the company's decision to invest in Indonesia was based on Indonesia's great potential.
She added that Microsoft recognizes the ambition of organizations in Indonesia to develop themselves while contributing to the national economy.
"By bringing our AI and cloud infrastructure to Indonesia, this is an opportunity to elevate individuals, communities, and organizations in Indonesia to the same global platform and standards as in other countries," Mattea said.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier announced the company's commitment to invest up to US$1.7 billion in Indonesia. The company plans to carry out the investment project over four years.
The investment plan includes the development of data centers, cloud, and AI; an AI training program for 840,000 people; and support for the developer community.
The AI training program for 840,000 people is part of Microsoft's mission to provide AI training for 2.5 million people in ASEAN countries by 2025.
