Manado (ANTARA) - A researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Syahrul Aminullah, stated that academics encourage the use of coral reefs through collaborative research and innovation.

"This can be a formal reference for actors to support national economic growth. Derivatives from coral reefs, for example, can become medicinal ingredients that can be researched by Indonesian experts," Aminullah stated on Sunday.

The researcher made the remarks at the International Conference on Sustainable Coral Reefs (ICSCR) in Manado.

He remarked that the coral reefs are present in Sulawesi and its surroundings in six countries, and perhaps, in the future, Sam Ratulangi University, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) or a consortium can take the requisite steps.

Aminullah, concurrently deputy chair of the ICSCR, stated that the international conference presented experts, such as professors, from various countries.

"We incorporate the points presented by experts from 24 countries into a communique that will be brought to the 2026 Ocean Summit in Paris," he remarked.

He noted that coral-related initiatives can serve as a catalyst for local economic development, potentially contributing to the enhancement of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB).

"Coral can be used for energy, medicine, pharmacy, seafood, fish, and so on. Downstream industry related to coral reefs in President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita is written for the blue economy," he remarked.

He remarked that the presentation of studies from various countries' experts who attended the international conference will serve as material for reflection.

The International Conference on Sustainable Coral Reefs (ICSCR) was held in Manado on December 13-15, 2024, with attendees comprising more than 700 scientists from various countries to share innovations and solutions for preserving coral reefs.
