Shin was first appointed coach by PSSI in December 2019, succeeding interim coach Yeyen Tumena, who had replaced Simon McMenemy.
Although Indonesia's national team did not win any trophies during his tenure, Shin's contributions cannot be overlooked. He achieved several notable accomplishments during his time as coach.
In his first AFF Cup, he guided the Indonesian national team to the final of the 2020 AFF Cup, also known as the ASEAN Championship. However, in the two-legged final, Indonesia finished as runner-up after a 0–4 loss and a 2–2 draw against Thailand.
In 2022, Shin led the Indonesian team to the final round of the 2023 U20 Asian Cup. During the qualifying stages, the team defeated Vietnam, Timor-Leste, and Hong Kong under his guidance.
Shin also took the team to the finals of the 2023 AFF U-23 Championship, where Vietnam narrowly defeated them in a penalty shootout.
In early 2024, Shin led the team to advance from the group stage in the 2023 Asian Cup, reaching the round of 16. However, their run ended with a 4–0 loss to Australia.
