Jakarta (ANTARA) - Special presidential envoy for climate change and energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, has confirmed that Germany has replaced the United State of America regarding the leadership of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

"I met with the German government delegation last week and they conveyed that they decided to replace the US as the lead member in JETP," he said here on Thursday.

The decision follows US President Donald Trump's policy to officially withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, and eventually, the JETP.

Trump's policy had raised Indonesia's concerns as the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) had previously committed to providing USD1 billion in financing to accelerate clean energy initiatives in Indonesia.

In parallel with domestic policy reform, Indonesia needs the JETP to mobilize investments in domestic renewable energy production to cut emissions, strengthen and expand the grid, advance energy security, create jobs, and grow the clean energy economy in the country.

Earlier, the German Embassy in Jakarta announced that Germany has taken over the co-chairmanship of the International Partners Group (IPG) of the JETP from early 2025.

Since the launch of the JETP at the 2022 G20 Summit in Bali, Germany has been a staunch supporter of Indonesia's energy transition, the embassy stated.

With one of the largest bilateral project portfolios in development cooperation dedicated to the effort, Germany is deepening its involvement by taking on the co-lead role and helping drive the next phase of JETP implementation.

Meanwhile, the IPG, consisting of the G7 countries, the European Union, Denmark, and Norway— along with the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), a global coalition of leading financial institutions—has pledged to mobilize US$20 billion to support Indonesia's JETP goals.

The commitment aims to limit emissions, significantly accelerate the development of renewable energy, and achieve net zero emissions in the power sector by 2050.

To reinforce the commitment, a high-level delegation from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), led by director general Christine Toetzke, visited Jakarta from February 17–21, 2025.

The delegation interacted with the Indonesian government, Japan (co-leader of the JETP), IPG, the JETP Secretariat, and the wider JETP community to review progress and identify key steps to accelerate implementation.
