Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid highlighted the Indonesian government's commitment to encouraging women's participation in the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem to create more varied solutions and prevent bias reproduction.

"The current data shows that women's involvement in AI development and leadershiop is still far from ideal," she stated in a webinar monitored here on Saturday.

In this regard, she affirmed that the government would strengthen collaboration with academicians, industry players, and international organizations to ensure women get equal access and opportunities in the AI industry.

She also highlighted the challenges and risks of AI adoption to women workers. According to Hafid, automation driven by AI can threaten jobs that so far have been dominated by women.

"If we do not take the right step, the digital divide between men and women could widen further," she cautioned.

To this end, she emphasized the importance of building an AI ecosystem that is not only advanced but also ethical and inclusive, as well as beneficial for all Indonesians.

In addition to increasing women's involvement, the minister said the government has implemented various policies to support ethical and inclusive digital transformation.

The government has passed the Personal Data Protection Law to maintain the security of public information.

In addition, it has issued an AI Ethics Circular, which emphasizes the importance of the principles of transparency, inclusiveness, and non-discrimination in the development of AI technology.

Furthermore, the government has carried out the development of digital infrastructure and AI literacy by expanding internet access across the country to ensure every citizen has the same opportunities to utilize technology.

"The movement of covering millions of citizens is strengthened by the focus on AI literacy, including for women and vulnerable groups so that they are not left behind in the automation era," she remarked.
