Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, emphasized the crucial role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of the national digital economy.

During a public lecture on digital transformation on Thursday, he encouraged students to deepen their expertise in AI technology so they can actively contribute to the ongoing global digital shift rather than remain passive observers.

“We must prepare for the era of AI, which is approaching rapidly. Soon, everything will be powered by AI,” Patria said in a statement released on Saturday.

He noted that digital technology enables more effective communication and interaction, adding that technological tools and digital applications, including AI, are now embedded in nearly every aspect of daily life.

“AI is already widely used. We simply give it instructions. It's evolving to become more human-like. That’s why digital skills are so important in today’s world. You can study communication, or any field of science, and integrate it with AI,” he explained.

Patria projected that Indonesia’s digital economy could reach Rp5,000 trillion (over US$296 billion) by 2030, potentially contributing up to 40 percent of the country’s GDP. He also noted that AI is expected to boost productivity by 3.5 percent.

“The government is responding to rapid global developments. President Prabowo (Subianto) has shown strong commitment to building digital infrastructure,” he added.

Currently, internet penetration in Indonesia has reached 80 percent of the total population, supported by an expanding telecommunications network.

Patria emphasized the important role of educational institutions in preparing skilled human resources to support AI development.

“Universities must take an active role in developing talent. They shouldn’t just wait but must take the initiative. That way, we won’t be left behind. We won’t just be users, but leaders in the digital age,” he pointed out.
