Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has said that the designation of national vital objects in the industrial sector (OVNI) could help prevent the extortion of companies.

"In fact, we have designated industrial companies as national vital objects, considering their assets as strategic," Kartasasmita informed here on Tuesday.

The problem of extortion, which has recently affected several industrial companies in Indonesia, has garnered public attention.

With the designation of industrial companies as national vital objects, the Industry Ministry can collaborate with the police to protect their production sites.

Earlier, Deputy Chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno said that extortion attempts have disrupted the construction of China-based PT Build Your Dream's (BYD's) electric vehicle factory in Subang district, West Java.

He noted that BYD is not yet actively operating the vehicle manufacturing plant. However, its construction has been disrupted by extortion efforts by certain community organizations.

The OVNI designation in industrial areas is regulated by the Industry Minister's Regulation No. 18 of 2018 concerning Guidelines for the Designation and Evaluation of National Vital Objects in the Industrial Sector.

A related policy is also outlined in the National Police Regulation No. 3 of 2019 concerning Providing Security Assistance to National Vital Objects or Specific Objects.

One form of the government's non-fiscal facility for industrial companies is the provision of assistance in securing national vital objects and specific objects.

Industrial areas will benefit from the OVNI designation, which will enhance the confidence of businesses to locate within industrial zones.

OVNI is deemed a key factor for ensuring security and certainty for investors in the industrial sector, and especially developers and managers of industrial zones.
