"According to our current data, 12 passengers were killed, while 25 others were injured. The joint rescue team has been deployed to rescue the victims," Ahmad Yani, the ministry's acting director general for land transportation, noted in his written statement here.
Yani confirmed that the ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities, including the police, the local transportation authority, and the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), to investigate the incident.
He explained that the bus, operated by PT Antar Lintas Sumatera (ALS), was bound for Padang City from Bukittinggi in West Sumatra.
While approaching the Bukit Surungan terminal in Padang Panjang, the bus, bearing vehicle registration number B 7512 FGA, lost control and rolled onto its left side.
Yani stated that based on a preliminary check through the ministry's Mitra Darat application, the bus did not have a valid operational permit and its routine vehicle inspection was due May 14, 2025.
In response to the accident, the acting director general urged bus operators and drivers to regularly check the condition of their vehicles and ensure all legal documents and permits are up to date.
