Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani emphasized that fostering a culture of peace and tolerance in establishing relations between countries is a prerequisite for development.

Maharani made the statement at the 19th Session of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference in Jakarta, Wednesday (May 14).

Puan emphasized that development can only be achieved in any country when there is order and peace both domestically and internationally.

"We live on the same Earth, are interdependent, and require mutual order and peace," she stated.

"There is no development without peace, and no peace without development,” she stressed.

In addition, Puan noted that the resilience of OIC member countries in facing global challenges is rooted in good governance and strong government institutions.

This aligns with the theme of the 19th PUIC Conference: "Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience."

She outlined several key discussion agendas at the conference, including strengthening solidarity between Muslims, promoting peace, advancing economic cooperation, empowering women, and combating Islamophobia, intolerance, and all other forms of discrimination.

"In addition, support for the struggle of the Palestinian people remains the main focus, with a discussion of concrete steps that can be taken by PUIC member countries," she remarked.

She further highlighted that the 19th PUIC Conference focused on political and economic issues. Therefore, education for the younger generation must be prioritized, as it can be a game-changer for national progress.

"With education, we can also maintain and preserve norms and culture," she remarked.

She noted that another agenda item is related to women's empowerment. Although women and men have different biological characteristics, both have equal rights to advance and develop their spiritual, intellectual, social, and economic potential.

Puan highlighted that several current PUIC parliamentary leaders are women, including herself as the first female speaker of the DPR RI.

She affirmed that this achievement can inspire many girls in the Islamic world to take on greater roles in society.

"I stand here as the first female speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives. This is proof that women can also hold high public office in a large country like Indonesia, with a population of 280 million," she stated.
