Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on digital sector cooperation in St. Petersburg on Thursday.

Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, confirmed that the partnership will soon enter the implementation phase.

“Indonesia and Russia agreed to form a special subcommittee to serve as the main driver of the joint digital program, which will include human resources training, technology exchange, and collaborative media content initiatives,” she said in a statement issued Friday.

The collaboration covers a wide range of areas, including 5G network development, the Internet of Things (IoT), radio frequency spectrum governance, cybersecurity, and the creation of inclusive internet policies.

It also includes cooperation in digital content production, bilateral seminars, and research exchanges between institutions.

Hafid noted that the MoU is valid for five years and can be automatically extended, providing a long-term framework for Indonesia’s inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital transformation.

Indonesia views Russia as a strategic partner, citing its success in delivering fast and affordable internet access to 92 percent of its population.

The digital cooperation MoU is one of four bilateral agreements signed by the two countries.

The document exchange ceremony took place at the Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg and was witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The four agreements include cooperation in higher education, transportation, digital and mass media, and investment—specifically between the two countries' sovereign wealth funds: Danantara Indonesia and the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

The exchange was further supported by the signing of the Indonesia–Russia Strategic Partnership Declaration, which aims to guide bilateral relations amid evolving geopolitical and digital economy dynamics.

“Indonesia’s digital diplomacy is now taking concrete steps. We want real outcomes that strengthen Indonesia’s position as an active player in the global digital landscape,” Hafid said.
