Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is continuing its weather modification efforts to support emergency response in Jakarta and its surrounding areas from July 7-11, 2025.

These efforts are a precautionary measure to address the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in the region.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday that on Monday, July 7, a Cessna 208 Caravan PK-DPI carried out a flight sortie carrying 800 kg of sodium chloride (NaCl) was conducted over the coastal areas of Banten and Lebak.

"On Tuesday (July 8), BNPB added a Cessna Caravan PK-SNL to its fleet to maximize operations and support the Greater Jakarta flood emergency response. With this additional aircraft, a total of six NaCl seeding sorties were conducted on Tuesday. Two PK-SNL sorties seeded the area in the southern waters of West Java and the northern waters of the West Java Sea," he remarked.

The seeding aimed to reduce the potential influx of air masses into West Java and Jakarta. In total, 2,000 kilograms (kg) of NaCl were used for the seeding.

Four sorties were conducted over the northern coasts of Karawang and Subang, as well as the northern coast of Indramayu. Each sortie carried 800 kg of NaCl.

Field observations after the weather modification operations indicated there was no rainfall in Jakarta, Bekasi, and the surrounding areas.

"In response to the dangers posed by hydrometeorological factors, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) urges local governments and residents to remain vigilant and prepared. For wet hydrometeorological events, particularly floods, landslides, and strong winds, BNPB has provided support, including through weather modification operations," he stated.

He urged all residents in disaster-prone areas to increase their vigilance against potential wet hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, and strong winds, given the continued high rainfall intensity in several areas.

According to the weather forecast from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the likelihood of extreme weather in the Greater Jakarta area is expected to decline over the next three days.

On Wednesday, July 9, the weather forecast for Jakarta predicted no extreme weather, while Banten and West Java were still expected to experience extreme weather with strong winds. Strong winds are also forecast to persist in Banten on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
