Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government aims to plant one kilometer of mangrove seeds along the coast within a year to ensure a green environment on the northern coast of the region.

"For mangrove planting, a minimum of 1 km is targeted every year," Secretary for Jakarta's Parks and Urban Forest Office Rudy Syahrul said here on Sunday.

Syahrul stated that on Saturday, to commemorate the 2025 World Mangrove Day and to restore the coastal ecosystem, some 10 thousand mangroves were planted across four locations.

He expected that the target for the year can be achieved.

Jakarta Governor's Special Staff, Nirwono Yoga, said that Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is committed to building a sustainable environment. To meet the goal, the government establishes urban green space, he noted.

Yoga expected that everyone, including public, private entities, and mangrove communities, can get involved in the initiative.

"So not just on mangrove day, but throughout the year, with a minimum target of 1 km. The more, the better," he noted.

Cited from UNESCO's official site, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated every July 26, since 2015.

Mangroves are unique ecosystems between land and sea. They support biodiversity, protect coastal communities, enhance food security, and act as natural defenses against storms and erosion. Their soils are also powerful carbon sinks.

Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two in the past 40 years.

Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay stated that mangroves are in danger. She noted that it has been estimated that more than three-quarters of the world’s mangroves are under threat along with all the aquatic and terrestrial organisms that depend on them.

"For this reason, UNESCO is acting to protect them and other valuable blue carbon ecosystems through its networks of Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks, and natural World Heritage sites," Azoulay noted.
