Jakarta (ANTARA) - During a meeting with South Korean legislator and presidential envoy Cho Jeong-sik, House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani called for the renewal of a bilateral agreement on the placement of Indonesian migrant workers.

The two lawmakers met at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to Maharani, the renewal of the memorandum of understanding on the employment permit system between Indonesia and South Korea has been stalled due to the latter’s objection to provisions regarding the protection of migrant workers in the fishery sector.

“Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea are laborers with admirable spirit and productivity. Hence, I believe that they have the ability to contribute to South Korea’s economy,” she said.

Bearing that in mind, the DPR leader sought support from the National Assembly of South Korea to advocate for maximum protection for Indonesian migrants working in the country. She expressed the hope that they will receive proper and decent treatment from local authorities.

The legislator also emphasized the importance of Indonesia and South Korea stepping up the bond and connection between their peoples, including through exchanges of students and lecturers, as well as joint research projects.

“It would certainly be greatly appreciated if Indonesian pupils and students can access more scholarships to study in South Korea,” Maharani said.

She then expressed the belief that intensified joint tourism and cultural activities between the two countries would help deepen people-to-people ties. She asserted that through such activities, both nations can mutually showcase their cultures and raise awareness about them.

“I believe that this meeting, despite its brevity, will prove useful for us to get updates on the bilateral relations forged between the two countries,” she added.
