Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani emphasized that Indonesia must strategically position itself to safeguard national interests amid escalating geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty.

Delivering her opening speech at the 2025 Joint Session of the DPR and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Friday, Maharani noted that the world is currently facing geopolitical conflicts, trade wars, climate and energy crises, widening economic inequality, technological disruptions, and a shift in global power.

“In today’s multipolar world, Indonesia must strategically place itself in international forums to advocate for national interests, addressing issues such as the environment, economy, geopolitics, global trade, and the pursuit of a more just world order,” she said.

Maharani observed that, like many other countries, Indonesia is inevitably affected by global developments. She stressed that the nation must build a solid foundation and maintain a clear direction to defend its sovereignty and national identity.

“To stand tall amid global changes without losing our ideals, we must base our policies on sovereignty, self-reliance, and nationalism,” she added.

“Sovereignty is not only about safeguarding territorial borders but also about ensuring that our foreign and economic policies are determined independently.”

Echoing Maharani’s remarks, Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani expressed support for President Prabowo Subianto’s efforts to promote peace in international forums, including advocacy for Palestinian independence.

“The MPR appreciates President Prabowo’s consistent calls for peace in international forums on the new world order, including his steadfast support for Palestinian independence,” Muzani said during his address at the 2025 MPR Annual Session.

He underscored that Indonesia’s foreign policy must remain firmly aligned with humanitarian values and consistently support for the independence of the Palestinian people.

Muzani added that this principle has long been reflected in Indonesia’s diplomacy, citing the Asia-Africa Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement as milestones that have inspired nations worldwide.
