“I have just returned from a 7-day foreign visit. I have monitored the development and will immediately summon the BGN head and several officials to discuss it,” he said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, on Saturday.
He noted that the MBG program will certainly face some obstacles at the beginning, especially given the large scale of the program. However, he underscored that those obstacles should be addressed well.
The president reminded that the goal behind the initiation of the free meals program is to support children who lack access to nutritious food.
The MBG program was launched on January 6, 2025, with the aim of improving the nutritional status of children under five, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and schoolchildren up to the high school level.
The program is targeted to reach 82.9 million beneficiaries across Indonesia, making it one of the largest programs implemented in the country.
In the last few weeks, cases of food poisoning linked to food provided in the free meals program have increased in several regions.
The BGN, which is tasked with implementing MBG, earlier reported that 70 cases of food poisoning related to the free meals program were recorded from January to September 2025, with 5,914 beneficiaries affected.
As a response, BGN Deputy Head Nanik S. Deyang stated that all MBG kitchens related to the food poisoning cases have been officially notified.
“Today, we have sent a letter to all kitchens that previously had problems. The verification process is now much stricter,” she said on Friday.
The BGN will also send inspection teams involving the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), regional health offices, and the National Police. The teams’ role is to evaluate the kitchens’ conditions and ensure compliance with standards.
