Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has set a target to upgrade and empower at least 65 villages across the country through the Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP) program by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

"We have commenced the program with 65 villages covered. Currently, 65 villages are under development across Indonesia. Hopefully, the process will be completed by December 2025 or January next year," Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated.

The minister made the statement on the sidelines of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2025 in Jakarta on Friday.

The initial target for KNMP, which has been declared a national priority program, is stipulated in Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministerial Decree No. 55 of 2025.

The 65 targeted fishing villages are spread across various provinces: Aceh, Banten, Bengkulu, Yogyakarta, Gorontalo, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, Riau Islands, Lampung, Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, West Sulawesi, Southwest Papua, and South Papua.

To support the program's initial target, the government has allocated Rp1.34 trillion (approximately US$80 million) in funding.

As part of the broader national plan, the KNMP program is expected to cater to 1,100 fishing villages by the end of President Prabowo Subianto's administration in 2029.

While construction is currently underway in 65 locations, the government has also earmarked funding for an additional 250 sites, as reflected in the Budget Implementation List (DIPA) under the 2026 State Budget (APBN).

The program focuses on building and upgrading key infrastructure in coastal villages, including docks, roads, drainage canals, and electricity systems. It also provides cold storage units, ice production facilities, boat repair and maintenance shops, logistics kiosks, and specialized fuel stations for fishing vessels.

Beyond infrastructure, the KNMP program is also designed to support the implementation of a quota-based measured fishing system in a bid to promote fair and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector.
