Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the joint declaration issued by leaders of 11 countries at the third Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur will significantly boost Indonesia's energy transition.
“This presents a major opportunity for Indonesia to strengthen energy transition financing and expand its abundant carbon market potential,” Airlangga said in press statement, Monday.
The declaration, signed by leaders from Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, outlines a shared commitment to global climate goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the 1.5°C threshold and achieving net-zero targets.
Airlangga noted that the declaration supports a just, affordable, and inclusive energy transition—one that protects developing economies, guarantees energy access, and enhances regional energy resilience.
He highlighted that each country is encouraged to pursue its own technological and policy pathways toward net-zero, while collectively advancing climate action, inclusive economic growth, and long-term energy security.
The leaders also agreed on the urgency of accelerating implementation over the next decade.
For Indonesia, Airlangga said this momentum brings not only expanded carbon market access and faster energy transition, but also support for decarbonization technologies such as hydrogen, renewables, and energy efficiency solutions.
He stressed that this strengthens Indonesia’s position in regional energy partnerships and supports the national goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060—an advantage for President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
With this joint statement, Airlangga affirmed that AZEC is moving beyond dialogue toward real implementation, and that Indonesia is ready to deepen cooperation in technology, financing, and institutional capacity within the AZEC framework.
