“Facing the increased movement of people during the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holiday period, the Ministry has prepared key strategies to anticipate traffic congestion,” Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan remarked in a statement here on Sunday.
Suhanan made these remarks while opening the Coordination Meeting on Holiday Movement Readiness for Central Java and Yogyakarta in Surakarta City.
He explained several strategies developed based on data and evaluations from previous Christmas and New Year transportation operations.
He noted that increasing road capacity is one of the strategies, especially since current road capacity cannot accommodate vehicles during the year-end holidays due to the expected rise in public mobility.
For roads leading to tourist destinations, he mentioned that an odd-even traffic scheme can be implemented to prevent congestion.
Increasing road capacity can be achieved through one-way, contra-flow, or odd-even policies, especially on tourist routes, to handle high vehicle volume.
“Stakeholders in the regions are encouraged to coordinate so that congestion on tourist routes does not recur,” he said.
Based on previous evaluations, restricting the operation of heavy trucks with three or more axles can also be applied to ease traffic flow on toll roads.
Furthermore, a delaying system is prepared to deliberately slow and reroute traffic to prevent total congestion at high-risk points.
The holiday season also coincides with peak rainfall, requiring anticipation of extreme weather and disaster-prone areas.
“The next key is applying K3I, or Control, Coordination, Communication, and Information. This way, we can build joint posts and integrate data from each stakeholder’s application so that responses can be quick,” Suhanan said.
