Transportation Ministry official Tatan Rustandi said in Jakarta on Monday that efforts to reduce emissions rely not only on technological advances, but also on the quality of transportation services directly experienced by the public.
“Convenience and equal service are key to encouraging people to shift from private vehicles to public transportation,” he said.
Rustandi explained that the government has developed a roadmap for decarbonizing the transportation sector through Ministerial Decree No. 8 of 2023, which covers land, railway, maritime, and aviation sectors.
In the land transportation sector, equal service is being pursued through the development of integrated urban public transportation systems, including buy-the-service schemes that have been implemented in several cities.
According to him, intermodal integration enables more comfortable and efficient travel from buffer zones to city centers.

Rustandi cited various public transportation connectivity in Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi, which are linked to Jakarta by rail, as an example of efforts to equalize transportation services.
The ministry is also promoting improved energy efficiency in the railway, maritime, and aviation sectors through the use of cleaner energy sources and studies on sustainable fuels, such as bioavtur, which is currently being examined in regions outside Java, including South Sumatra.
“Decarbonization is also being implemented in the railway sector through the development of electric-based modes such as the MRT and LRT, as well as in the maritime and aviation sectors through studies on the use of more sustainable alternative fuels,” he said.
Rustandi stressed that these programs reflect the government’s commitment to developing low-emission transportation in a sustainable manner, accompanied by improved service quality for all segments of society.
