Arriving in Aceh Tamiang on Friday, the Vice President observed the condition of the school, which suffered damage to nearly all major facilities, particularly classrooms and offices on the ground floor.
The flooding significantly disrupted school activities. Of the 698 students, 665 were directly impacted. Similar conditions affected the staff, with 67 of the 71 teachers and personnel displaced or affected by the disaster.
As conditions gradually improved, learning activities relocated to nine classrooms starting January 28, 2026. Students from different grades were combined and teaching schedules were adjusted to accommodate the limited space.
In line with President Prabowo’s directive, Gibran emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring children’s right to education is fulfilled. He called for the accelerated post-disaster recovery of educational infrastructure.
Before leaving, the Vice President pledged to speed up the procurement of essential furniture.
“The Vice President will expedite the procurement of desks, chairs, and boards for our school,” said Edi Wahyudi, the principal of SMPN 1 Karang Baru.
He noted that the Vice President also emphasized coordination for full school restoration.
“He will coordinate the recovery process to the maximum extent,” Wahyudi added.
The inspection underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the education sector's recovery proceeds in tandem with disaster response efforts, allowing teaching activities to resume optimally and sustainably.
