“I am here to see a Red and White Fishing Village already being developed in Gorontalo. I have seen that this village is already equipped with an ice production plant, a cold storage, and some other facilities,” he remarked before local residents.
In a speech observed online from Jakarta on Saturday, Prabowo emphasized that the government initiated the KNMP program to empower fishermen and coastal communities nationwide, enabling them to elevate their living standards through upgraded villages.
He explained that the approach reflects the government’s recognition that fishermen play a central role in national development, citing their contribution to boosting the economy and improving public protein intake with their catches.
The president also noted fishermen’s empowerment as part of efforts to advance Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency push.
Furthermore, Prabowo highlighted that the KNMP program aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to promote the blue economy, which centers on the capitalization of marine resources.
He then pointed out that the government had set a target to complete the development of 1,386 fishing villages across the country by the end of 2026.
“We will continue developing one thousand fishing villages annually in coming years,” the head of state added.
Moreover, Prabowo highlighted plans to build 1,158 fishing boats to be distributed to fishermen nationwide through cooperatives.
During his 2026 May Day speech in Jakarta on May 1, the president underscored that the KNMP program is projected to elevate the welfare of at least 20 million residents nationwide, particularly fishermen and their family members.
Under the program, the government seeks to help fishermen overcome long-standing operational issues by providing requisite facilities and equipment, including ice factories intended to maintain the quality of catches.
“Knowing that many fishermen have long sailed without ice, we decided to build ice factories in every fishing village,” Prabowo remarked.
