Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) called on Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), universities, and community organizations to form sexual violence task forces to prevent abuse and protect victims.

Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah stated that establishing these task forces is an urgent need as cases of sexual violence remain prevalent.

Speaking virtually from Jakarta on Saturday during a discussion with Fatayat NU of Blitar District she emphasized integrated prevention mechanisms.

She explained that these task forces are essential to establish clear reporting channels, provide victim advocacy, and ensure swift responses.

Without such institutional mechanisms victims risk facing immense barriers to achieving justice and receiving necessary support.

Hidayah further said that the presence of the task force is crucial to ensuring victims receive essential recovery services.

These services include safe shelters, professional psychological counseling, and legal aid as part of their recovery process.

According to her the task force can bolster the understanding of the academic community regarding various forms of sexual violence.

These categories are outlined in the Sexual Violence Crime Law (TPKS Law) and include verbal, physical, and electronic-based violence.

“A mechanism must be established, including at the community level, on how to prevent sexual violence,” she stressed.

She emphasized the importance of community organizations' involvement in building internal protection systems to support victims.

These systems ensure that victims are not afraid to speak out and do not face social pressure after reporting.

She reminded that early prevention efforts must go hand in hand with firm law enforcement to deter perpetrators.

Hidayah also noted that most sexual violence cases occur due to imbalanced power dynamics between perpetrators and victims.

These unequal dynamics appear in various spaces including universities, pesantren, and workplaces which places victims in a vulnerable position.

By strengthening these task forces the commission hopes that environments can become safer and more responsive spaces that support victims.
