Mentawai (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has built 316 houses for tsunami victims in Mentawai Islands regency, West Sumatra.

"Of the planned 516 houses, 316 units had been completed by PMI for the tsunami victims in Mentawai Islands regency," PMI chairman for disaster mitigation Lt Gen (ret.) Sumarsono said here.

He said earlier PMI planned to finish building the houses on the occasion of Christmas, but due to the difficult terrain and bad weather the construction work faced problems.

"We planned to complete the houses of tsunami victims in Mentawai Islands in two months, to enable them to occupy the houses," he said.

He said the 316 houses are already occupied.

"But 15 were still under construction, 436 had their structure already erected, and 415 already have roofs," he said.

He added that PMI built 516 houses in Pagai Selatan 27, 37 and 40 kilometers from Lakau.

On a different occasion, head of the West Sumatra PMI office Hidayatul Irwan said to facilitate the building of 516 houses in Pagai Selatan PMI recruited 175 volunteers of different skills, 4 trucks, 4 rangers, and 10 motorcycles.

He also said that each family received Rp5 million for buying wooden building material.

"In the first stage, 416 families had received the money, and in the second stage 117 families received the money from PMI", he said.(*)
