Langkat, N.Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Tobacco from nipah (Nypa futricans) leaves produced by Tanjungpura, Langkat district, North Sumatra province, is known in some countries, particularly in Malaysia and Thailand, a local businessman, Khairul said here, Monday.

"The nipah leaves cigarettes are also well-known abroad," he said.

Demand for cigarettes from nipah leaves is quite high reaching nearly 7 tons in the two countries and every month we sent to Malaysia and Thailand, Khairul noted.

Meanwhile, the domestic demand is not as much as the overseas demand.

"Only 600 kilograms of the cigarette leaves are requested by the tobacco enthusiasts in the country each month," Khairul said.

Khairul said that in a single bundle of nipah cigarettes for local consumption and exports, weighing one kilogram and every one sack containing tobacco leaves weighing 33 kilograms.

Thailand shipments could reach 200 sacks of jute, or about 6 tons per month. This commodity is shipped through the Belawan port. As for Malaysia, only one ton is shipped per month, he added.

As for the local market only 600 kg is sent to Blang Kejeren, Aceh, each per month.

Khairul also said that 30 people helped him to produce the nipah leaves tobacco 3 to 4 days per ton besides getting it from Langkat and Deli Serdang, nipah as the raw material for cigarettes.(*)
