Kupang, NTT (ANTARA News) - The police of Indonesia and Timor Leste are cooperating to prevent drug trafficking in regions along the two countries` common border.

Timor Leste consul for East Nusa Tenggara Feliciano da Costa said here on Wednesday security in Timor Leste regions on the border with Indonesia had been tightened to prevent drug dealers from operating there.

He said the cooperation was conducted in accordance with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Indonesian and Timor Leste police which was signed in Jakarta in 2010.

"Both parties choose International Anti Narcotic Day on June 26, 2011 as an early milestone for realizing the cooperation between the police of Indonesia and Timor Leste in the prevention and eradication of drug smuggling and drug abuse," Feliciano said.

At the peak event of International Anti Narcotic Day 2011, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono instructed the National Narcotic Board (BNN) to spearhead the national strategy of drug prevention and drug eradication.

Feliciano da Costa said President Yudhoyono instruction was highly appreciated by Timor Leste National Police and then tightened the security against drug circulation at border area in cooperation with Indonesian police.

"Narcotic problem is a universal issue that has direct impact on the people safety, especially the younger generation, and therefore it should have public attention regardless of status, race, and territorial boarder," he said.(*)
