Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA News) - A lawmaker appealed to police on Tuesday to disclose the motives behind the recent mysterious shooting incidents which killed a number of people in Aceh province.

"I hope that police will soon disclose the motives behind and arrest the perpetrators of the series of shooting incidents that have claimed many lives in Aceh," Deputy Chief of the House of Representatives Commission III Muhammad Nasir Djamil said.

Three shooting accidents took place in Banda Aceh, Bireun and North Aceh at the end of last year and early this year, leaving five people dead and eight others injured.

Djamil said police had not yet found the perpetrators of the shooting accidents and disclosed the motives behind the cases.

He feared that the recent grenade attack in Aceh would incite similar incidents in other parts of the province.

"Should police be able to disclose the shooting of Saiful alias Cage in Bireun some time ago the case might not recur in other parts of the province because the networks had been detected," he said.

National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono said earlier in the day the military was ready to help police secure the situation in Aceh in the wake of the recent mysterious shooting incidents which killed a number of people.

"We are always ready to back up the police whenever they need our help," Agus said at the Presidential Office.

He said both the military and police were always ready to take anticipatory measures to secure the situation in Aceh.

"Admittedly, police have anticipated a number of shooting cases (in Aceh) and the TNI has so far helped police," he said.

Three people were shot dead while working on telecommunications company PT Telkomsel fiber optic cables in Bireun district, Aceh, on December 31 last year.

Earlier, on December 29 last year, the Aceh provincial police arrested two people for allegedly being involved in a shooting case in North Aceh district, on December 4, 2011. Three people were killed in the shooting.(*)
