"The act of the anti-terror police squad in raiding the terrorist hideout in Ciputat is reasonable," Kompolnas commissioner Syafriadi Cut Ali said, while inspecting the location of the raid on Saturday.
Syafriadi noted that when the Kompolnas inspected the area and obtain information from local officials, it came to light that the actions of the anti-terror police squad was reasonable and had not violated regulations or laws.
He said the police had called for the terrorists to give themselves up in their rented house, but they attacked the police, instead, and a shootout that claimed the lives of six terrorists occurred.
According to National Police spokesman Brigadier General Boy Rafli Amar, the six terrorist suspects who were shot dead during the raid on New Years eve in Ciputat had planned to conduct suicide bombing attacks.
"From the documents weve confiscated, we suspect that the terrorists were planning to attack some Buddhist monasteries that had less security," Boy confirmed on Thursday.
Apart from the documents about the terrorists plan to attack Buddhist monasteries, Boy added that the police also confiscated papers containing methods to assemble homemade bombs, chemical substances and electronic cables.
The police reportedly found six pipe-shaped bombs, five long knives, six guns, one 38 calibre revolver and 34 9 millimeter bullets.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said in a text message to Antara here on Saturday that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono admired the efforts of the Indonesian Police in preventing terrorism.
Julian said the president admires Polris achievements and encouraged the police to continue to perform their duty in a professional manner.
"The president admires Polris achievement in ensuring the security and safety of Christmas and New Year celebrations," Julian said, adding that before Christmas the National Police chief reported to the president that there was reason to be concerned about the possibility of terrorist acts being carried out.
For this reason, the president instructed the National Police chief and his staff to take necessary steps to ensure security and safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.(*)
