"Currently, we are processing Jokowis (Joko Widodos) resignation letter as governor. We are still discussing it with his team," a spokesperson from the Jakarta Province Government Heru Budi Hartono stated at the City Hall in Central Jakarta on Friday.
However, although the letter is currently being processed, it is not yet determined when Jokowi will step down from his post as Jakarta governor before being officially inaugurated as the Indonesian president.
"So, later, Jokowi will submit a letter to the Regional Representatives Council (DPRD). Then, they (the parliament) will issue a resignation permission in a plenary session," added Heru.
Heru expects that after the resignation permission is granted, the council can immediately inaugurate the new governor of Jakarta.
"The process is almost similar to what was followed during Jokowis non-active period as a governor. Following the parliaments decision, the resignation letter will then be taken to the Interior Ministry to determine the Presidential Decree, where it will also appoint Jokowis replacement," noted Heru.
Heru said that Jokowis resignation process can be completed in a single day as the related paperwork and other documents have been prepared in advance.
"If it is possible, the replacement for Jokowi can be directly appointed and sworn to avoid Jakarta governors post from being left vacant, although there is the regional secretary of Jakarta," Heru pointed out.
Earlier, the General Elections Commission (KPU) in Jakarta announced the running presidential candidate pair, Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla, as the elected president and vice president for the 2014-2019 term as they garnered 70,997,833 votes or 53.15 percent of the total valid votes.
