Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The scenic Parangtritis Beach in the Special Region of Yogyakarta is not actually for swimming but only for visitors to enjoy its beauty, according to Yogyakarta branch of National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Chief Supriono.

"The characteristic of the southern sea along Java where Parangtritis Beach is located is not good for tourists visiting the beach to swim, but to unwind and enjoy its beauty," Supriono remarked here on Thursday.

He stated that the number of victims drowned in Parangtritis Beach so far has proven that the beach is quite dangerous for swimming.

In addition to high waves, off shore the beach is also a deep basin which is quite dangerous for swimmers.

According to him, two tourists who drowned while swimming in Parangtritis on Sunday were dragged by the current into the bottom of the trough.

Regarding the danger point on the beach, according to him, Bantul Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has marked it by installing a memo board. However, he said that due to the fun of playing water tourists often do not pay attention to the memo board.

"Therefore, tourists who come to the beach must be careful when playing along the beach," he said.

Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has previously issued an appeal for tourists to be wary of high waves in the southern sea.

Based on the official website of BMKG Yogyakarta high wave of sea on the south coast on Thursday is estimated to still reach 2.5 -3 meters.
