Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian badminton athlete Jonatan Christie won gold after beating Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the men`s singles final at the Asian Games 2018 in Istora Senayan, Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, here, Tuesday.

Christie beat Chen, winner of the 2018 Singapore Open, 21-18, 20-22, 21-15. The game was tough, as both players worked hard to dominate the match.

"Jojo, yes you can," the Indonesian fans chanted repeatedly to support Christie.

After confirming his victory in the third set, Christie opened his shirt and received a standing applause from the Indonesian fans.

The last time Indonesia had secured a gold medal in the Asian Games men`s singles was in 2006 following the victory of Taufik Hidayat, 12 years ago.

The 18th Asian Games is being co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

Indonesia is, so far, ranked fourth in the medals tally, with 23 gold medals. The top three in the medal standings are respectively China, Japan, and South Korea.
