This potential cooperation was offered by Pelindo II Managing Director Elvyn G Masassya during a meeting with the Chair of the Mexican Senate Commission for Asia Oceania Africa, Senator Cora Cecilia Pineda Alonso, in Mexico City, as stated in a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City received by ANTARA here Friday.
The meeting was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to Mexico City, Yusra Khan, four Mexican senators who are members of the Asia Oceania and African Commission, Directors of Pelindo II, and representatives of the American Directorate 1 of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting with the Mexican Senate was important because it was in line with the completion of the Mexican parliamentary and presidential elections in July. The elected Mexican president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), will be sworn in on December 1, 2018.
At the meeting, Ambassador Yusra explained that as the largest port manager in Indonesia, Pelindo II has all the experience and capabilities to manage international-class ports.
In addition, cooperation on ports between Indonesia and Mexico is expected to increase trade cooperation between the two countries.
Responding to Pelindo II`s offer and Ambassador Yusra`s statement, Senator Cora and other Mexican Senators expressed their support to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Collaboration on the port sector is seen as having important value in enhancing bilateral economic and trade cooperation. For this reason, the Mexican Senators were very enthusiastic to forward the cooperation in the port sector offered by Pelindo II to the port management in their constituent areas, such as Camphece and Cancun.
The Mexican Senators promised to continue their support for Mexico`s new government under elected President AMLO.
A number of strategic projects have been conveyed by AMLO, especially development projects in the southern region of Mexico.
Right after being named Mexico`s elected president, AMLO invited nine ambassadors from Asia Oceania countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand to offer opportunities in the development of strategic projects in the southern Mexico region.
One of the strategic projects to be built is the Mayan railroad linking Salina Cruz, the port city facing the Pacific Ocean, and Coatcoazul, a port city facing the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to the Panama Strait, if the Mayan railway line is completed, this route will become an alternative transportation track that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Responding to the offer of the new Mexican government to Asian Oceania countries, especially Indonesia, on September 2018, the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City facilitated some Indonesian SOEs, such as PT INKA and PT Barata Indonesia, to see the potential for cooperation in Mexico related to the procurement of locomotives, carriages, railroads and other spare parts from Indonesia.
The Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City also encouraged the signing of a memorandum of understanding on import-export funding between Indonesia Eximbank and Bancomext.
