To build infrastructure at the heritage site, Padang’s government has to coordinate with the expert teamPadang (ANTARA) - A former coal warehouse at Teluk Bayur Port, Padang, West Sumatera, called Silo Gunung has been officially recognized as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.
The Mayor of Padang, Mahyeldi, will receive a certificate at the inauguration ceremony of Silo Gunung as a world cultural heritage site in Padang,Tuesday, from the Director of Cultural Heritage and Diplomacy of the Education and Culture Ministry, Nadjamuddin Ramly.
Silo Gunung, which is also known as the 2.5-hectare area of C Coal Storage Facility at Emmahaven Port, is considered the very last processing warehouse for the coal transported from Sawahlunto.
From the warehouse, coal was loaded onto the ship leaving from Teluk Bayur Port.
With Silo Gunung receiving the world heritage status, the concept of “Padang Kota Lama” (the Old Town of Padang) as a tourist town will be completed, Mahyeldi stated.
“Soon, this area will have a passenger train track which will make it a strategic location,” he said.
Aside from that, the local government will also establish water transportation since it is situated near the water.
The government needs to form the West Sumatera World Cultural Heritage Management Agency, Ramly stated.
“To build infrastructure at the heritage site, Padang’s government has to coordinate with the expert team,” Ramly said as he emphasized that Silo Gunung will not be changed, but restored.
