Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted the criticality of the police’s involvement in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly to maintain public adherence to health protocols and secure the distribution of social assistance.

"In this difficult situation, the presence of the Indonesian Police and its involvement is increasingly necessary. Personnel at the Police headquarters, regional police, district police, sub-district police, and Bhabinkamtibmas (public order police officers) in villages should be involved to encourage people to apply health protocols and secure the distribution of social assistance," Jokowi noted at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Jokowi made the statement at the virtual ceremony to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Indonesian Police.

On the occasion, the attendees comprised Police Chief Gen. Idham Azis, Indonesian Military Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto.

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, cabinet ministers, regional police chiefs, and district police chiefs across the country attended the ceremony held through videoconferencing.

"Of course, the Indonesian Police has maintained security and public order to create a conducive and peaceful situation," Jokowi remarked.

The head of state asserted that public safety remain the main priority in a bid to support health and to handle economic problems.

"I need to affirm here that public safety is a priority. Public safety and interest is the highest law. Conduct this humanitarian task in a persuasive manner but stay vigilant and be quick and stern in your response in handling any violation of the law," he remarked.

Jokowi instructed the police, Attorney General’s Office, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and supervisory institutions to bolster cooperation.

"Please supervise the utilization of the budget for handling COVID-19 and support the acceleration of its implementation. The budget allocation is quiet high, at Rp695.2 trillion, and it can be increased if necessary," the president stated.

However, Jokowi urged the authorities to give due to emphasis to the aspect of corruption prevention.

"Thank you and my highest appreciation for your dedication and sacrifice to maintain security, public order, and law enforcement, as well as service and protection for the public," he affirmed. Related news: Jokowi instructs police to assist in creating productive society
