Jakarta (ANTARA) - The recently opened Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang toll road complemented the Jakarta inner city toll roads, part of Greater Jakarta's toll road systems, according to Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

"The Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang toll road will complement the five rings of Greater Jakarta's toll road systems that comprise six segments of Jakarta inner city toll road, JIUT, Jakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR) I, JORR II, and JORR III," Minister Hadimuljono noted in his press statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The total length of the six toll road segments spanned almost 70 kilometers (km), with the Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang functional segment stretching nine km, the minister remarked.

The ministry's Toll Road Regulatory Agency Head Danang Parikesit highlighted the importance of the Greater Jakarta toll road system for the capital and its satellite cities and for easing the movement of people and cargo.

"For Jakarta and its satellite cities, the toll road network system will alleviate traffic congestion on the local management system. The toll road system will ease the movement of people and cargo necessary for economic development. Cargo movement from Sumatra to Central and East Java will be easier through the Greater Jakarta toll road system," Parikesit expounded.

Parikesit expects the Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang toll road to boost logistics distribution, especially to cater to shipping activities in the Marunda Special Economic Zone and Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta.

He noted that apart from catering to private vehicle drivers, the Jakarta Inner City toll road will also accommodate public transport users.

Earlier, on Monday (Aug 23), the Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang toll road was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo after construction commenced in February 2017.

The Kelapa Gading-Pulo Gebang toll segment was constructed by PT Jakarta Toll Road Development Jaya Pratama and joint contractor PT Jaya Konstruksi - PT Adhi Karya, with a total budget of Rp3.16 trillion (around US$221 million) and a total investment of Rp4.88 trillion (around US$341 million).

Budget for the toll road construction was secured by combined funding from the government, state-owned enterprises, and private companies.
