Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), Nurul Arifin, has said that the DPR needs support from the community for the finalization and ratification of the personal data protection bill (RUU PDP).

"Knowing the urgency of RUU PDP, we (DPR) need support from the community so that the bill that is currently being discussed can be finalized as soon as possible and be ratified as law, in accordance with its goals and objectives, namely for the security of personal data in Indonesia," she said at a webinar on ‘Awareness of Personal Data and Privacy Protection,’ accessed from here on Friday.

According to Arifin, support from the community can become a force that pushes the government and the DPR to finalize and ratify the bill without delay.

So far, several regulations regarding personal data have been implemented in Indonesia, she said.

"There are at least 19 regulations regarding personal data in the form of laws, government regulations, presidential regulations, and ministerial regulations," she explained.

They include Law Number 7 of 1992 regarding Banking, Law Number 36 of 1999 concerning Telecommunications, Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Informatics (Permenkominfo) Number 20 of 2016 concerning Protection of Personal Data in Electronic Systems, and Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 concerning Electronic Transactions and Systems.

Even so, existing regulations are still partial and sectoral, she said. Thus, they are still deemed insufficient for providing optimal and effective protection to the personal data of the Indonesian people in the digital world, she said.

This condition underlines the importance of finalization and ratification of the personal data protection bill, she informed during Friday’s webinar, which was organized through a collaboration between the Directorate General of Informatics Applications of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and Commission I of the DPR.

"This is the basis for the importance of the Personal Data Protection Bill, which is currently being discussed by the government and the House of Representatives," she remarked.
