"In the April 25–May 1, 2022, period, a total of 78,228 passengers and 461 aircraft were served (at the airport). This demonstrates that residents’ interest to travel to Surabaya by air is high," president director of Angkasa Pura I, Faik Fahmi, noted in a statement issued here on Monday.
He revealed that after Juanda Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, was the second busiest, with 57,724 passengers and 330 aircraft served during the period.
Makassar's Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport was the third busiest, logging 30,006 passengers and 243 aircraft movements, he added.
Overall, the company served a total of 2,485,107 passengers and accommodated 21,441 aircraft movements at its airports during the period from April 25 to May 10, the president director informed.
"This demonstrates that residents' interest to travel by air is high because (air travel) consumes less time, is efficient, and safer from COVID-19 infection," Fahmi said.
He further informed that during the Eid al-Fitr exodus return period from May 4–10, the busiest route served by the company was from Bali and Makassar to Jakarta, with a total of 107,825 passengers served and 635 aircraft movements logged.
The second busiest route was from Bali and Makassar to Surabaya, with a total of 67,209 passengers and 393 aircraft movements, the president director said.
Juanda International Airport also recorded 239 extra flights -- the most among Angkasa Pura I-operated airports -- followed by I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport with 204 extra flights, and Yogyakarta International Airport with 139 extra flights, Fahmi added.
"Observing the increasing air travel statistics during the 2022 Eid al-Fitr period and easier prerequisites for air travel (during the COVID-19 pandemic), we are confident that the aviation industry will soon recover to the pre-pandemic level," he remarked.
