Jakarta (ANTARA) - Holding the 2022 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is part of the efforts to map Indonesia's digital talents, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology stated.

"This is part of the government's efforts to achieve the target of nine million Indonesian digital talents by 2035," the ministry's Secretary General Suharti noted here on Wednesday.

For the first time, Indonesia became the host for the International Informatics Olympics. The 34th IOI will be held in Yogyakarta on Aug 7-14, 2022.

Holding the IOI brings extraordinary benefits for Indonesia, as it not only prepares the national digital talents but also introduces Indonesia's tourism potential to IOI participants from overseas, she explained.

In addition, it is part of the ministry's efforts to support the national economic recovery.

"Some 89 teams from 90 countries will participate in this IOI. We expect that this IOI can be a beacon, the light, that can inspire students in the country," Suharti remarked.

Chairman of the 2022 IOI Committee, Brian Marshall, noted that during Indonesia's participation in the IOI, the country managed to bag five gold medals and 40 silver medals.

Marshall, who is concurrently part of the Indonesian Computer Olympics Team alumni, emphasized that several positive values can be imbibed by participating in IOI.

Participation in IOI can facilitate in continuing education and also help in the professional world, he noted.

The 2022 IOI also brings positive benefits for Indonesia since holding the event can showcase Indonesia as a leader on the global stage, according to Marshall.

As quoted from the event's website, within IOI, high school students from various countries compete in the prestigious algorithmic competition to hone their informatics skills.

These skills include problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming, and testing.
