"The first is to expand the conservation area, with a target of 30 percent of the total area of the Indonesian waters to maintain and increase fish populations and maintain the function of carbon sequestration," Trenggono remarked at the working meeting of the Marine Fisheries Human Resources Research Agency of the KKP in Jakarta on
Tuesday.
The second is to maintain the sustainability of fishery resources, increase regional economic growth, and boost the welfare of fishermen by catching fish based on quotas, he added.
"Later, any fish caught in the Arafura Sea must be processed and sold through Arafura," he explained.
The third strategy is to maintain the carrying capacity of the environment through conducting environment-friendly fish cultivation, in the form of marine, coastal, and inland cultivation, for the welfare of the community and to boost fishery production for export and domestic markets.
Trenggono remarked that cultivation was focused on superior fishery products, such as shrimp, crab, lobster, and seaweed.
The fourth strategy entails marine spatial planning to protect the coastal and marine ecosystem. All activities that utilize the marine space must align with the allocation of sea space, carrying capacity, and prevention of its impacts.
The last one is to conduct the Sea Love Month Program under which fishermen are not allowed to catch fish for one month in a year. In its place, fishermen must take out garbage from the sea for collection, and to this end, be rewarded with the lowest selling price of fish per kilogram of trash.
"During that month, fishermen would still be able to have income coming from collecting marine debris," the minister stated.
The Sea Love Month Program will be held in October across all Indonesian waters.
Trenggono is optimistic that these five strategies would be able to maintain fishery resources and sustainability in Indonesia for the subsequent generations.
