Since 2010, the Surabaya City Environment Office has planted as many as 16,263 tabebuia trees, comprising the broad-leaved Tabebuia Rosea and the small-leaved Tabebuia Chrysantha, head of the office, Agus Hebi Djuniantoro, said in Surabaya on Friday.
Of the total tabebuia trees, 11,392 trees have white and pink flowers, and 4,609 have yellow flowers, he informed.
"There are 100 purple tabebuia trees and 162 red ones. So, the total number of tabebuia trees that have been planted is 16,263," he said.
Thousands of tabebuia trees have been planted along Ahmad Yani Street, Ir Soekarno Street, Mayjend Sungkono Street, Manyar Street, Kertajaya Street, Sulawesi Street, Ngagel Street, Diponegoro Street, and Gentengkali Street.
"These tabebuia trees begin to bloom around April and September. The flowers last approximately three to four days and then fall off," he said.
According to Djuniantoro, the tabebuia trees can tolerate heat, so it is suitable for them to live in Surabaya's hot climate.
Moreover, tending tabebuia trees is very easy, he informed, saying his team routinely takes care of the trees, which originated from South America. Their maintenance involves watering and fertilizing, in addition to cutting off branches that grow irregularly to ensure the safety of road users and residents.
"Tabebuia trees can blossom within 2.5–3 years after planting," he said.
Djuniantoro revealed that the city government will continue to increase the number of tabebuia trees in the city of Surabaya, especially trees with red and purple blooms.
