Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation stated that it cooperates with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in handling extreme weather that may occur in several regions in Indonesia.

Specifically, the two institutions cooperate in the operation of flights supported by weather modification technology from Halim Airport, the Ministry's Air Transport Director, Putu Eka Cahyadi, noted in a press conference with BMKG streamed online on Friday.

The program has been implemented from December 29 to this day, and 13 flights have been supported by this technology.

Moreover, Airnav, as the field operator, has collaborated with meteorology stations on the field while Airnav's Air Traffic Control (ATC) has systematically been connected to BMKG, he stated.

On the occasion, River, Lake and Ferry Transportation Director at the Ministry Junaidi also highlighted anticipatory efforts made to monitor extreme weather in Indonesia.

A maritime Inawis (Indonesia Weather Information for Shipping) has been installed in one of the offices of the ministry's unit in Merak, Banten, he revealed.

Inawis is an equipment that can identify the condition of currents, wind speed, and the wave height.

According to Junaidi, this equipment is beneficial in monitoring the weather at Merak-Bakauheni Port and the entire ferry route during this year's Christmas and New Year period.

Meanwhile, in relation to the weather modification technology, his group supports the endeavor.

"We very much support and assist this effort, specifically in Merak Bakauheni, where extreme (weather was experienced) on December 22," he said.

"We had to close for five hours and not let ships depart for Merak-Bakauheni," he explained.
