Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua provincial government has said that it expects recent disruptions in telecommunications services to be mitigated quickly so that they do not happen again.

The disruptions in the telecommunications network on Thursday (March 9, 2023) did not halt all government services, but only those of some regional apparatus organizations (OPD), the head of Papua's Communication and Informatics Office, Jeri Yudianto, said here on Friday.

"The disruption was not significant because the Papua provincial government's main server used ASTINet," he informed.

However, he said that operators need to maximize existing links and restore disputed services more quickly.

According to him, only a few OPDs experienced difficulties that required them to temporarily stop services due to disrupted intranet Indihome and Orbit.

Meanwhile, General Manager of Telkom (Papua area) Agus Widhiarsana said that telecommunications disruptions in Jayapura on Thursday occurred in the Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua Cable System (SMPCS).

The telecommunications network in Jayapura and its surroundings was disrupted since 8:05 a.m. local time and has now slowly recovered.

"An interruption happened allegedly in the SMPCS sea cable system on the Sarmi-Biak section, and is currently being further identified regarding the location point and the cause," Widhiarsana disclosed.

State-owned telecommunications enterprise PT Telkom Indonesia Regional 7 is investigating the cause of the disruptions in the Sarmi-Biak section.

Currently, cellular operator Telkomsel is using the backbone link of the North Papua Sea Cable Communication System to operate its services.

Telkomsel's General Manager of region network operations and productivity for Maluku and Papua Agus Sugiarto said that it would take a while to repair the cable section in the Sarmi-Biak section.

"We are preparing and further identifying the disturbances as well as other materials and the permit to conduct the operation," he added.
