Probolinggo, East Java (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the Probolinggo Disaster Mitigation Agency (Probolinggo BPBD) held a simulation for a disaster early warning system to anticipate Mount Bromo's eruption.

"This activity is expected to increase the capacity of local governments and the community in responding to the early warning information of a disaster," Head of the BNPB Dissemination and Evaluation Sub-directorate, Rucky Nurul Wursanty Dewi, noted in a statement on Friday.

The simulation was attended by around 70 people of the Village Disaster Preparedness Team, BPBD representatives, community organizations, as well as village officials, regional leaders coordination forum (Forkopmida), and representatives from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) on November 2.

During the simulation training, participants took part in installing instrumentation for early warning tools for volcanic eruptions and increasing community capacity as well as boosting the capacity of regional and village governments in disaster mitigation, Dewi remarked.

"The disaster simulation carried out in this activity mostly focused on managing and responding to early disaster warning information to increase the capacity of regional governments and the community in managing disasters," she stated.

The implementation of an early warning system in the regions aims to ensure public's understanding regarding early warning of potential disasters and regulate standard operation procedures from normal conditions to emergency situations, Dewi remarked.

This is then followed by creating a network and coordination between individuals, community groups, and organizations to respond quickly and effectively to early warnings and create rapid decision-making mechanisms that can shorten disaster responses to save lives, she affirmed.

In this activity, a member of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Anisa Syakur, symbolically handed over the Early Warning Instrument for the Danger of Volcanic Eruptions in the form of a radio communication device to Chief of the Probolinggo BPBD, Oemar Sjarief.

Sjarief then expressed gratitude for the assistance and the early warning disaster simulation activity as a form of anticipation of the eruption of Mount Bromo in Probolinggo District.
