The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) reported that the hacking attacks began on Sunday and affected hotels in several regions, including West Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra, Riau Islands, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and South Sulawesi.
"We encountered a technical issue that caused incorrect modifications to several business profiles. We've implemented a solution to prevent further errors and are actively restoring accurate information," Google said on its X account on Tuesday.
PHRI chairperson Haryadi B.S. Sukamdani said he is still gathering data, but confirmed that at least 92 hotels in East Java, 156 in Central Java, and 8 in Lampung have been affected by the attacks.
Sukamdani revealed that hackers altered hotel information on Google Business accounts by replacing phone numbers with WhatsApp numbers, as well as modifying bank account numbers and reservation details.
The fraudulent activity poses a significant risk to unsuspecting consumers. Sukamdani reported that ten people fell victim to the scam in Central Java alone.
PHRI urged the public to exercise caution when making hotel reservations and to verify information through the hotel's official channels, such as social media or the official website.
The association also emphasized the importance of using official hotel accounts for payments and verifying account numbers before making transactions.
PHRI plans to report the hacking incident to the Indonesian National Police.
